Introduction

Overview

Doing-it-yourself brings a special kind of satisfaction: It's the undiluted pride you squeeze from a freshly solved problem. It's the rush of self-sufficience and respectful envy of your peers. It's also the fuzzy warmth of a tightly woven community.

PrintBed elevates this philosophy by taking advantage of current technology. It's an image sharing platform for people with a passion for 3D printing and other kinds of making. PrintBed makes it easy for high school hobbyists, innovative artists, pragmatic engineers and cool dads alike to share their stories and get inspired.

Brief

Objective

Objective: Create an app that enables a community of additive manufacturing enthusiasts to share their projects, compare their techniques, and inspire other makers. It should foster a positive ownership of the craft while encouraging users to exchange knowledge freely.

Approach

The app leverages existing image sharing platforms in its design, but maintains focus on both the projects and relationships that my users spend hours developing.

Conclusion

Analysis

PrintBed is an example of image sharing for a niche market. Image apps have been done before, but I had to keep in mind who would be using it. My next steps would include a more robust information architecture and finer-tuned mechanisms for social interaction, such as commenting and sharing.
